Why Do You Get Dry Skin In Winter?
Sophia Ahmed
Winter can be hard on your skin as the cold, dry air strips moisture out of its surface. This is why so many find their skin feeling uncomfortable during the winter season. Look for ways to add extra moisture back into your skin in order to combat dryness. You can try increasing your intake of water and other hydrating fluids or use heavy moisturizers and humectants such as shea butter, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid to help hydrate your body from within. In addition, try not to stay in heated spaces for too long – this will only compound the dryness problem. With a few simple adjustments, you'll find that your skin can easily survive even the coldest winter days. Low humidity and windy environments, which is what we are exposed to in winter, accelerate this water loss through the skin. Water loss is further accelerated by direct heat that blows on the skin, which is what happens when we turn on heaters in the car and at home. So, skin often dries out during winter because of the environmental changes we are exposed to and the things we do to try to keep warm. While dry skin looks and feels less than desirable, it also increases itchiness and this can trigger eczema. Itching may also result in secondary infection in the skin.
So aside from turning down the heater, what else can you do to avoid dry skin this winter?
