Treatments for Frizzy Hair

Why Causes Frizz?

There is one important thing to remember when it comes to frizz. Thirsty hair = frizzy hair! The main reason for the dreaded frizz is simply because your hair lacks moisture. Your hair can become dry for many reasons. It could be due to environmental factors, heat or chemical damage, or simply using the wrong products.

Our hair contains hair cuticles that cover the outer layer of the hair. If these cuticles are closed, your hair will appear smooth and sleek. If your hair cuticles are raised, your hair will appear rough, dry, and, you guessed it, frizzy! When you’re hair cuticles are open, it will also leave your hair much more vulnerable to damage.

So, what can we do to tame the frizz? The first step is understanding what causes our hair cuticles to rise so that we can do our best to solve the problem. We asked our hair care experts for the leading causes of frizzy hair and the best solutions to keeping your hair healthy, smooth and frizz-free!

Leading Causes of Frizz

Humidity

If your hair is dry, your cuticles will open to try and absorb moisture from the air around you. This is a particularly big issue in humid environments. Your hair will absorb moisture from the air, which will cause your hair strands to swell, resulting in frizz.

Chemical Treatments

If you chemically straighten, color, bleach, or perm your hair, there is a good chance the damage from these treatments will cause dryness and frizz. Doing these kinds of treatments regularly can damage the cuticle leaving the hair brittle and dry, the perfect recipe for frizz.

Heat

Extreme heat, including styling tools like hair straighteners and curling irons, evaporates the moisture from your hair, leading to frizz. Hot weather and hot water can also cause damage to the hair cuticles and create the perfect environment for frizz to set in.

Over-Washing

So, by now, we know that dryness is the enemy of frizz. Washing your hair too often will remove your hair’s natural oils, which could lead to dryness. Avoid washing your hair every day; two to three times per week is usually sufficient for most hair types.

Tips to Avoid Frizzy Hair

Tip #1 – Choose the Right Products

Using the correct products will help keep your frizz under control. Look for moisture-rich products designed specifically for frizzy hair.

Tip #2 – Avoid Heat Styling

Although heat styling might provide a temporary solution to frizz, in the long run, it will likely make the condition much worse. Limit how often you use heat styling tools, and always use a heat protection product first.

Tip #3 – Use a Microfibre Towel

When drying your hair, try using a microfibre hair towel or even a cotton t-shirt. Regular towels are rough on the hair and cause friction, damaging the hair cuticle.

Tip #4 – Do a Cold Water Rinse

When you wash your hair, finish with a cold water rinse to help seal your cuticles. During the wash, the lower you keep the temperature of the water, the better!
