What are Perfume Notes?
Perfume notes are essentially layers of scents that work together to make the final fragrance. The notes are separated into three categories: top notes, heart notes, and base notes.
Top notes are the first thing you notice when you first spritz perfume. Top notes don’t last as long as the other notes but are vital as they create the fragrance’s first impression. Some typical examples of top notes are light citrus and fruity scents like lemon bergamot or berries.
Heart notes are the fragrance’s foundation and are usually about 50-80% of the overall perfume. Once the top notes start to wear off, the heart notes take over and influence the rest of the fragrance that follows. Examples of typical heart notes are jasmine, rose, and neroli.
Base notes are essential as they create a lasting impression of the perfume. They are usually rich notes like vanilla, sandalwood, and musk. Base notes carry the fragrance right through until the end and will start to come through around the time the top notes fade.
