What Causes Dark Circles?
Poor Diet
Not getting enough of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to thrive can affect our skin. Certain vitamins and minerals like B12 and Iron help transport oxygen around the body. A lack of oxygen around the eye area can lead to dark circles.
Lack of Sleep
The problem with not getting enough sleep is that it really shows in our eyes! The skin around our eyes is thinner than the rest of the face. When we are overtired, the blood vessels in our eyes become more visible, giving the appearance of dark circles.
Age
Sometimes it's just a case of good old mother nature! As we age, our skin becomes thinner, which makes the blood vessels beneath the skin much more visible. During the ageing process, the tissues under the skin also start to thin, which makes dark circles appear worse.
Sun Exposure
Unfortunately, too much sun can cause a lot of issues for our skin. In terms of dark circles, sun exposure increases the amount of melanin in the skin. Since the skin around the eye area is so thin, it can quickly become pigmented.
Allergies
Allergies can cause or intensify the appearance of dark circles. If you notice your dark circles worsening during spring and summer, then allergies could be the culprit. If you also get itchy eyes, resist the urge to rub them, as this can increase the appearance of dark circles.
Genetics
Although many environmental factors cause dark circles, they can often just be hereditary, passed down through generations. If your dark circles are genetic, it's important to look out for the environmental factors mentioned above to avoid making them worse.
