Cleansing Tips
#1 - Double Cleanse
Double cleansing makes all the difference when it comes to removing makeup and deeply cleansing the skin. The first time you cleanse your skin, you will mostly remove oil, dirt, and impurities from the surface of your skin. After this oil barrier is removed, repeating the process will allow your cleanser to work deeper into the pores.
#2 - Wash Your Hands First
As a general rule, the less you touch your face, the better! When cleansing, it's important to thoroughly wash your hands first to avoid spreading bacteria on your skin, which could lead to breakouts or make acne much worse.
#3 - Don't Over Cleanse
Cleansing too much can strip your skin's moisture barrier, leading to dryness and sensitivity. Aim to cleanse your skin twice daily, in the morning and evening. If you are doing something active, like a gym session or fitness class, it's best to do a quick cleanse to remove sweat and bacteria.
#4 - Don't Use Hot Water
When it comes to cleansing, lukewarm water is your best friend! Using hot water on the skin can draw moisture out of your skin, leading to dryness and dehydration. Hot water can also irritate your skin's natural barrier, causing sensitivity.
#5 - Shop for Your Skin Type
Using the right cleanser for your skin type is essential! A cleanser is the first line of defense when targeting your skin concerns. Whether you have oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin, you need a cleanser specifically designed for your skin type.
#6 - Stay Away From Soap
For our skin to be at its happiest, it needs to be Ph (acid/alkaline) balanced. Our skin's Ph level is around 5, whereas most traditional soap has a Ph of between 9 and 11. This change in Ph can cause dehydration and sensitivity. If you prefer to use soap, look for a Ph-balanced one.
Types of Cleansers
Gel Cleansers
Gel cleansers usually have a foaming agent that creates a lather when mixed with water. Generally, gel cleansers are great for combination and oily skin types. Cleansing gels are typically more potent than other types of cleansers, which means they can easily eliminate the bacteria on the skin that leads to acne.
Cleansing Oil
Cleansing oils have boomed in popularity in the last few years. They are best known for their incredible makeup-removing abilities. Since most makeup is oil soluble (meaning it dissolves in oil), a cleansing oil can break down makeup incredibly quickly!
Milk Cleanser
A milky or creamy cleanser is an excellent option for dry or sensitive skin. Milk cleansers contain softening and hydrating ingredients that soothe and nourish the skin while removing oil and impurities from the skin's surface.
Water Cleanser
Cleansing water, also known as micellar water, is a great option when you need to cleanse in a hurry! They are super convenient, all you need is a cotton pad, and there is no need to rinse them off. They are also very gentle and can help to soothe and calm sensitive skin.
