Stearic acid is a fatty acid composed of 18 carbon atoms and derived from animal or vegetable sources. It is often found in lipids, soaps, skin care products, makeup and shampoos. It has a wide range of uses due to its unique properties; it can act as an emulsifier and surfactant, possess lubrication qualities, and help control the viscosity and stability of cosmetic formulations. Stearic acid acts as an effective cleansing agent by helping water molecules bind to dirt and oils on the skin's surface in order to be more easily rinsed away. In addition, its melting point is higher than that of other common fatty acids which helps provide more emollient properties.
